Worms in Dallas

Howdy, Dallas. We're Living Waters Homestead, a family worm farm out in Wise County, northwest of the Metroplex, and we raise live Red Wigglers and European Nightcrawlers for gardeners all across Dallas and the eastern side of the metro.

Most worms sold online travel a long, hot way to get to Texas — often shipping out of Georgia or points north. Ours start right here in North Texas, so they reach Dallas after a short trip instead of a cross-country haul. For a living creature, that shorter ride makes all the difference in how healthy it shows up.

Taming Dallas Blackland Clay

Dallas sits square on the blackland prairie, which means most gardeners in town are working that famous black clay. It's genuinely fertile ground — it grew some of the best cotton and farmland in the state — but it's a beast to garden in. It cracks wide open in the summer drought, turns to sticky gumbo after a rain, and packs down so tight that roots struggle and water pools on top instead of soaking in.

Worm castings are one of the best things you can add to blackland clay. They help loosen that dense structure, improve drainage and aeration, and build up the soil life that keeps clay from setting up like pottery. Gardeners who start working castings into their Dallas beds usually notice their soil getting easier to dig and their plants getting happier within a season or two.

Keeping Worms Cool in Transit

A Dallas summer will cook a poorly-shipped box of worms in a hurry. Being close by is the best protection there is — your worms just aren't in transit long enough to get heat-stressed. We ship Monday through Wednesday and keep watch on the forecast, holding orders through the worst heat so your worms arrive in good shape.

Where to Begin

Red Wigglers are the top pick for composting kitchen scraps into castings for your Dallas garden. European Nightcrawlers handle the outdoors a bit better and make excellent bait if you fish White Rock or head out to one of the area lakes.

All of it is backed by our live arrival guarantee. Have a look at our composting worms, and if you're building your first setup, our worm bins and bin supplies have you covered.
